Track & Field  Konami;Kemco (Konami)1987The Armchair Olympics Are On The Air! This ain't no 20-minute workout. It's the ultimate in head-to-head athletic competition, in 8 grueling events. 100-Meter Dash. Long Jump. Hurdles. Javelin. Skeet Shooting. Triple Jump. Archery. And the High Jump. No timeouts, no breathers, no water boys. Just you and your own exhaustion. So get psyched. Pick your level of competition and the opening event. Then block out the roar of the crowd, and take a deep breath. Because it's not whether you win or lose. It's whether you survive.***1 player or 2 players simultaneous competitive.
[Zerothis]***Track & Field combines the events of the two separate Japanese cartridges [game=#173086]Hyper Olympic[/game] and [game=#168936]Hyper Sports[/game] into a new game, which was a very good idea, because with a total of eight events you get more fun for your money. All events are very well playable and motivating. The game had a very late release date in Europe (1992) and apparently they renamed the title to profit from the fact that this was the year of the Olympic Summer Games in Barcelona (Spain).

Tetsudou Ou: Famicom Boardgame  dB-SOFT1987"Tetsudou Ou" is a board game where up to 4 players compete with trains and the board is a railroad track. It does remind me a lot of the more well-known [url=http://www.uvlist.net/groups/info/momotetsu]Momotarou Dentetsu[/url] series, but "Tetsudou Ou" was released a year earlier, so it was not inspired by it (but maybe vice versa). The map is actually part of Europe, displaying the region between England in the Northwest and the Alps in the Southeast, which is strange. I guessed they would take Japan as location. Technically it is not very impressive with rather simple graphics and music. But for a board game it is OK. After rolling the dice "wheel" you move around the track hoping that a positive action happens. It seems that you could kind of buy some train stations, similar to Monopoly as well. All in all a pretty average game which in the end is nearly impossible to play for people that don't understand Japanese. labelimageminimize
Paris-Dakar Rally Special!  Sony (ISCO)1988"Paris-Dakar Rally Special!" is the strangest interpretation of a Paris-Dakar rally game I have ever encountered. From the title you might expect an ordinary racing game, but you can't be possible more wrong. The game consists of several stages, each with vastly different gameplay. First of all the game starts in Tokyo in an adventure mode. You have to walk around the city and must get a car, money and a sponsor for the race. After that you switch between top-down racing stages and side-view stages. The top-down view stages are also very different from each other. One level features a maze-like design with narrow streets in another one you have to evade desert creatures and the most astonishing one has you to avoid and shoot hostile tanks and jetfighters! And yes you are able to shoot in some of the stages. The side-view stages are reflex-tests. You are driving your car, again shooting creatures and avoiding stuff like falling eggs from birds or huge boulders rolling down the street. From time to time your characters must leave the car and jump over some pits to activate levers in order to being able to progress with the car again. One level even takes place underwater... yes driving in your car. All this sounds pretty insane and thats exactly what it is. An insane mix of gameplay elements. Nothing plays particularly well and the game is by no means a good one. But at least it did surprise me in a funny way I must admit. labelimageminimize

Defender of the Crown Ultra Games;Palcom Software (Beam Software)1989The in-game story seems to refer to the end of the second crusade and one of the few battles that the crusading forces actually won. Undoubtedly this is backstory and the game is set some time later than 1149 and sooner than 1199 (which is the historical beginning of John of England's reign). Probably the murdered king mentioned is Henry II of England, who actually died of natural causes in 1189; but his health was certainly not improved by the actions of his sons, especial Prince John. Never the less, the in-game date begins counting from October 1149. The game takes much dramatic license. The player is one of the six knights mentioned in the story and all of these knights will be battling for England.
